St Patrick’s Day Activities for Middle School Students

1. Decoding Coordinate Grid Riddles & Jokes

Every middle schooler should be well-acquainted with the coordinate grid. Help your students strengthen their graphing skills with this St. Patrick’s Day activity!

This resource provides a coordinate grid with letters at various points. In order to solve the five fill-in-the-blank jokes & riddles, they must locate the coordinate assigned to each blank and fill it in with the corresponding letter. Upper elementary and middle schoolers love decoding these riddles, and the repetitiveness of locating each coordinate pair will help them strengthen their graphing muscles without even realizing it!

2. Limerick-Writing for Middle Schoolers

Limericks are silly poems that follow a very particular rhyme scheme and rhythm. Revive your students’ love for a fun rhyme with this limerick-writing activity!

This resource first provides three limericks as examples so that students can get familiar with the format, together with questions about the rhyme scheme. Then, three templates are provided to help them come up with their own silly poems. Assigning students to study limericks and create them will help them grasp the writing devices used in poetry while exercising their creative writing abilities!

3. Color-by-Number Proofreading Activity

It’s not easy to get students excited about grammar, especially when they often communicate without it over text messaging. Proofreading activities will train their brain to spot errors, which will help them find mistakes in their own writing!

Have your students read through miswritten sentences and identify their errors with this themed proofreading assignment. They’ll be tasked with reading through each of the 14 miswritten sentences and identifying each sentence’s error. Using the provided key (run on=red, capitalization error=blue, etc.), they’ll color in a fun image based on the mistakes they identify! While it may not get them passionate about punctuation, this thematic twist is sure to make this editing a fun experience.

One of the tougher ideas for middle school math students to grasp is solving two-step inequalities. Help them practice it with this themed, targeted practice! The fifteen algebraic phrases correspond with fifteen equations in algebraic notation—students must match them to reveal the riddle’s answer. Algebra novices will appreciate the themed nature of this practice assignment.
