We’re excited to announce the launch of our new English enrichment course for 11th grade English Language Arts (ELA 11). This course is our latest addition to a series designed for the enrichment and remediation of core academics.
Our previous English enrichment courses include offerings for 5th grade (ELA 5) and 8th grade English Language Arts (ELA 8). We also offer math enrichment courses for 5th grade (Math 5) and 8th grade math (Algebra I) and, simultaneous with the launch of ELA 11, an 11th grade math course (Algebra II). Our plans for next year include courses in both English and math designed for 6th and 7th grade students.

Introducing ELA 11
We designed the new ELA 11 course to help 11th grade students with both enrichment and remediation. This course heavily emphasizes improving reading skills through a diverse group of texts, including short stories, narrative non-fiction, informational texts, novels, plays, and argumentative texts. Aligned to Common Core standards, the course is divided into six genre-specific units:
- Unit 1 – Short Stories (5 stories at launch, including classics by Poe and Mansfield)
- Unit 2 – Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (11 chapters)
- Unit 3 – Informational Texts (16 texts)
- Unit 4 – The Great Gatsby (9 chapters)
- Unit 5 – Drama (6 plays, including works by Ibsen, Wilde, and Shakespeare)
- Unit 6 – Argumentative Texts (16 texts focusing on current events)
Two of the units ask students to read full-length works (Frederick Douglass’ Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby). Students are presented with questions on every chapter of these classic works, as well as questions which explore overarching themes and general ideas.
At launch, the ELA 11 course features nearly 120 reading passages and over 1000 questions. We estimate that most 11th grade students will take between 30 and 40 hours to fully work through this material. Assuming that the average US school is in session for about 35 weeks, this means that enrichment students could spend about an hour each week with Piqosity’s new English course.
Students using Piqosity to remediate or prepare for a standardized test such as the ACT or SAT will likely have to compress this timeline.
