I remember when I learned the Mandarin word for rabbit as an exchange student at Peking University in 2005. I was at my professor’s home for dinner, and his very young son–maybe 5-years old–was trying to have a conversation with me. He used the word tùzǐ, and I told him I didn’t know that word. In response he folded his hands over like rabbit paws and started hopping!
